Do not give parties tickets to criminals

EC comment on Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) has made key comments in the Supreme Court. The Election Commission on Friday said that candidates who are contesting the election should be informed of their convictions in electronic and print media. Instead, the commission said it would be better for political parties not to issue tickets to candidates with criminal intent.

Justice RF Nariman and S Rathnayaka said they would come forward within a week with plans to curb criminals' entry into politics for racial purposes. The Constitutional Bench comprising Ravindra Bhatt sought EC. The court directed the petitioner and BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay to discuss the matter with the Election Commission and come to them. In September 2018, a five-member panel of judges announced that all candidates contesting ahead of the election should inform the Election Commission of the details of their convictions, as well as the widespread publicity in the print and electronic media.
